The MAP (Millennium Access Plus) Project, led by Greg Anderson at the University of Newcastle, optimizes library resource access through a centralized search interface and effective resource linking. With a $5M resource budget, 50% allocated to databases, MAP integrates services like Web Access Management and Metafind to streamline user experiences and improve usage statistics. The project involves comprehensive beta testing, addressing authentication issues, and ensuring remote access to library materials while enhancing information literacy and scholarly resource development for global user bases.

MAPMillennium Access PlusBeta Testing Project Greg Anderson University of Newcastle
Background • 50% + of $5m Resource budget allocated to datasets and bibliographic databases • Global client base using ISPs, firewalls etc • Usage statistics for online resources
Background continued • Single search interface across multiple library resources – ScienceDirect via CSIRO • Integration with other Millennium modules • Cost savings associated with information literacy
What is MAP?Millennium Access PlusBrings together 3 components:-Web Access Management – Authentication & statsMetafind - Universal Search InterfaceWebBridge – Resource Linking - Each is a distinct product
WAM (Web Access Manager) • Purchased in 1999 • Managed authentication based on patron privilege level and IP address • Detailed usage statistics by:- • By Patron level • Database - # of logins, time logged in • Combination of the above
What happened? - 2000 • Internet traffic monitoring – annual bill > +100% • University Proxy Server and LDAP directory • Emphasis changed to tracking information rather than accessing information • WAM – on hold • Problems • access behind firewalls • browser configuration • remote access impossible from some locations
Beta testing - MAP - 2002 • Involved with 2 products – Telephone renewal service and URL checking • General release upgrades • Staff benefits – skills, knowledge etc • Financial benefits • Australian perspective
WAM - revisited • WAM essential for beta testing trial • Network group – convince data providers to authenticate at the source of the service • Library going its own way again! • Scholarly information resources exempt • Trial using 2 proxy servers – University and the Library • WAM upgrade
WAM - 2002 • Rewriting proxy method • No browser reconfiguration • Remote access to resources • Elimination of firewall problems • Implementation – not all academics had library accounts + PIN • Used to using LDAP username/password
Metafind – Universal Search Interface • A single search allows simultaneous searching across library resources (full text, electronic journals, bibliographic databases, catalogues etc) • Result lists are integrated and linked directly to the resource
What information sources? • Any web-based resource: - search engines, specialty websites, licenced databases • Any Z39.50 server • Any web-based local database: image or archive databases
MetaFind: Features • Group databases within subject area • Simple and advanced searching
120 databases profiled by III Nominated Australian databases Html control over to the library Metafind - Current status
What is it? • A web linking product • Dynamic and contextual links • WebBridge links from the WebOPAC
Issues • “Do you want fries with that?” • Priority to link bibliographic to full text eg Pubmed (External to external) • Human resources
Timeframe • WebBridge – general release now • MetaFind – profiling underway • September 2003 – customer access to profiling • MAP launch – 2nd Semester 2003
