  4. Interview Types • “Informal” interview • Phone interview • Conference “short” interview • On-Campus interview

Informal Interview • The process of selling yourself when giving a talk at a potential hiring institution OR when someone from a potential hiring institution is visiting your current institution • Discussions at conferences/workshops, social and otherwise • Arranging or helping to arrange such encounters are useful in the pursuit of any type of job • Since there is often no formal interview for research post docs the informal interview may bethe only type of interview you’ll have for the position

Phone Interview • Scheduled in advance (via email) • Can be with one to multiple interviewers • Prepare: • Location: quiet space, good phone connection, NO distractions! • Materials: specific application materials, notes about the school • Questions: specifics about your interest in working there and living there; have questions to ask them! • Some weirdness! Be energetic and know it is weird for them too!

  7. Conference Short Interview (1) • Scheduled in advance (via email), sometimes last minute (by phone or in Employment Center folders or on the meeting message board) • With a subset of the Hiring Committee (can include students) • Location: Employment Center OR an alternative prearranged place

Conference Short Interview (2) • PREPARE! • Dress professionally! • Know much about the school • Be prepared to specifically explain your interest in the position and in the location • Be prepared to give a short overview of your research to people who are not experts in your field • If possible, know who you are interviewing with (and know about them) • Bring supporting materials (e.g. a teaching portfolio, copies of your generic application packet if you can) • Have questions to ask them • Breathe =) It is very stressful for everyone!

  9. On Campus Interview! (1) • Very exciting! • Completely exhausting! • You are interviewing them at this point also • All about the fit! • Be yourself!!!

  10. On Campus Interview (2) • People (one at a time usually, except at meals) • Dean, Provost, and/or President • Department Chair • Many to all faculty members (and maybe some staff) • At least one faculty member outside the department • Students • Human resources

On Campus Interview (3) • PREPARE: • Backups of presentation materials (memory stick, email) • What can you do for them: classes you can teach or develop, research problems for students, supporting programs • What can they do for you: course release, travel support, service requirements, start up funds, sabbatical policies, housing programs, etc.

Timing • Offers come with decision deadlines and frequently the deadlines are before you’ve heard back from other schools • Can negotiate for more time • Call other schools to let them know you have an offer and a deadline • Sometimes the conflict cannot be fixed • If you accept an offer let other schools know

  14. Decisions • PERSONAL • Get lots of advice but…. • You know what is right for you! • There is no wrong priority—you have to work at the job you take; you have to live the life you lead.

  15. Negotiations • DO IT!!!!! • They won’t rescind the offer. • PREPARE! • Know Salary Ranges – The Chronicle and AMS (and sometimes AAUP) give info • Other offers in hand are relevant • Know what you NEED and what you WANT • Get it all in writing!

  16. What can I ask for? • Salary • **Travel funding** • Course release • Computer Resources (software and hardware) • Start up funds • Time to decide • Summer funding • Moving expenses • Tenure Clock….. • Project NExTFunding • Library funds • Deferments

  17. Final Thoughts • There are exceptions to every rule, go with the flow! • It’s a stressful time, try and have some fun outlets. • The job hunt is complex, don’t take anything personally. GOOD LUCK!!!
