  1. ANU Internet Futures project and Data Grids Markus.Buchhorn@anu.edu.au Jon.Smillie@anu.edu.au Stuart.Hungerford@anu.edu.au

  2. Background • Internet Futures project combines staff in Network Services, Data Grids, Visualisation, TeleCollaboration • Very user focussed, ANU foremost but a national (and international) view • Initiated out of the GrangeNet project • High-speed 5-10Gb/s R&E backbone Mel/Cbr/Syd/Bne • Around 7EFT • Students to start next year, hopefully

  3. Grid Services • Think of the Power Grid • Standard interface, don’t care who the supplier is • Apply to IT • Computing Grid • Visualisation Grid • Collaboration Grid • Data Grid • Various underlying technologies (middleware) • support AAA, efficient delivery, security, interoperability, … • Metadata, p2p vs master/slave, file/memory sharing, …

  4. Data Grid projects - 1 • Physics: BELLE/ACIGA • Large scale (multi-TB) Physics data sets distributed around the country and around the world • Scaling to Petabytes per year by 2005… • Requires efficient access, movement, and delivery to computing and visualisation resources • ANU, U.Syd, UoMelb., …

  5. Data Grid projects – 2 • PARADISEC • Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures • ARC funded, ANU, U.Syd, UoMelb • Large-scale (10-20TB) archive of ultra-high-quality audio recordings (spoken and music) • Major metadata issues (content description as well as Rights-Management)

  6. Data Grid projects - 3 • Virtual Observatory • ANU, ATNF (CSIRO), AAO, UNSW and global • Various surveys and large scale archives of astrophysical observations • Never before brought together under one banner • Will never appear on a single site

  7. Data Grid projects - 4 • BioInformatics • Genomic data, many sources around the world • Efficient access requires mirroring or caching • Full access requires rights-management • Useful access requires computing, visualisation • ANU, and pretty much every other major University, CSIRO and various major BioInformatic research centres.

  8. Data Grid projects under discussions • Virtual Museums, Cultural Archives, Libraries • Film and Media archives, and production • Earth Observation/Remote Sensing

  9. Comp-Grid User Visual-Grid Query and Results Authenticate, Authorise Collab-Grid ACCESS! and account Rep. Rep. 10. I won’t talk about • Our other areas • TeleCollaboration for R&Ed. • Networked Visualisation for R&Ed. • Advanced Communication Services • …
