  1. Physical and Chemical Changes Organic Compounds

  2. Stand up if you’ve ever wondered… • What those ingredients are on the products you use every single day…

  3. Well then your going to want to Sit down and pay attention • Next time you use a product, look at the ingredients. • Those ingredients are compounds. • Compounds are chemically formed elements. • http://www.teachnet.ie/macalvey/compound.htm

  4. Organic vs. inorganic compounds • Organic compounds are produced by living things. Inorganic compounds are produced by non-living natural processes or by human intervention in the laboratory. • Organic compounds contain carbon. Inorganic compounds don't. • Organic compounds contain carbon-hydrogen bonds. Inorganic compounds don't.

  5. What is organic chemistry? Organic chemistry is the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and synthesis of organic compounds.

  6. What is an organic compound? • Organic compounds are composed of carbon and hydrogen, and can possibly contain any of the other elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur.

  7. Carbon • Carbon is a naturally abundant nonmetallic element which forms the basis of most living organisms. • All living organisms contain carbon, and as they decay or change, they will continue to contain the element. • Carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe, and it plays a crucial role in the health and stability of the planet through the carbon cycle.

  8. Examples of organic compounds • Acetone – used to take off nail polish.

  9. Organic Compound • Caffeine In humans, caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, having the effect of temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks, enjoy great popularity.

  10. Organic compound • Castor oil

  11. questions • What is a compound? • Name two different types of compounds? • What do all organic compounds contain? • What is an example of an organic compound?
