  1. God’s New and Final Covenant, Jesus The Bible is a covenant document. The Old and New Testaments are really old and new covenants. The word "testament" is Latin for covenant. Eternal God, in His kindness toward man, made covenants with man so man might have a relationship with God. Each covenant was initiated by God. Each covenant addressed a specific situation.

  2. The covenant made with Adam was God’s promise to make a way for Adam to return to God. Even though Adam had chosen to ignore God’s instructions and was separated from God. The covenant pointed to someone in the future who would deal finally and completely with mankind’s rebellious nature. So from the very beginning God was pointing to a covenant that would be final.

  3. The covenant made with Noah was one in which God offered Noah and those who believed God an escape from judgment of the wickedness and rebelliousness of that time. It points to God’s mercy and favor extended to those who believe and obey God. God provided a sign in the rainbow which would be a constant reminder of God’s mercies and hope to future generations.

  4. The covenant made with Abram was God’s promise to extend His mercy and love through the lineage of Abram (later called Abraham) to the world. Abraham’s descendants would be a blessing to all the nations of the world. God promised to make them a great and numerous people with a specific land given to them. Again we see God took the initiative and made a promise to include mankind in His plans and purposes on earth. The descendants of Abraham thought God’s covenant with them made them a privileged people rather than a responsibility to represent God to the nations and show the peoples of the earth the way to God. They did not fulfill the desire God had for them.

  5. The covenant made with Moses God brought about freedom from slavery for the people He called His own. God used Moses to lead them out of bondage through a wilderness journey to bring them into the land He had promised Abraham and his descendants. Along the journey God gave the law that was to guide and govern the people. This law would insure the people to be all that God intended them to be. They totally ignored God’s law and consequently lost their relationship with God.

  6. The covenant made with David was a promise to extend David’s Kingdom and provide a King who would rule in righteousness eternally. However, disobedience brought David’s earthly kingdom to an end. God’s promise to establish David’s kingdom was to be fulfilled not in an earthly kingdom but an eternal kingdom with a righteous King.

  7. All the old covenants failed to accomplish what God desired for mankind. But they all pointed to a new kind of covenant, a final covenant that God would make with all people. That new and final covenant was established by Jesus to make possible a lasting relationship with God. Jesus is superior to all that has gone before.

  8. “The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctified them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offer Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God. For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” Heb. 9:13-15

  9. The New and Final Covenant • This new covenant was based on God’s action alone. It reflects God character and His great desire to have a relationship with you and me. • It is a covenant of mercy and grace. It is a covenant based on God’s paying the penalty for all of mankind’s rebellion and sin. • By the power of this covenant God changes our hearts, our will and desires. A new heart is possible because we have been forgiven of our sins by the sacrifice of Jesus. • This new covenant provides all that is needed to establish the everlasting relationship with mankind that God desires.

  10. Here are the basic elements or fundamentals of the New Covenant: God gave His Son Jesus “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

  11. Though Jesus is God, He became man “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” John 1:1 “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

  12. He placed Himself under the law “But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.” Gal. 4:4-5

  13. He died for us, though we did not deserve His sacrifice “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:6-8

  14. Jesus initiated a memorial for to remember this new covenant “…Jesus took the cup, saying ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.’ ” Luke 22:20

  15. Jesus is the hope of eternal salvation and relationship with God for all who believe on Him and await His return “… But now He (Jesus) has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Just as man is destine to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.” Heb. 9:26b-28

  16. To enter into the new covenant you must believe that Jesus died for your sins and trust Him to give you a new heart “…If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:9-13
