Silesian Region Cluster basic data • The most urbanized region of Poland • 14 % of gross national product • 17 % of sold production of Polish industry • 12,1 % of Polish R&D potential • 112 universities, R&D and research units Research and Innovation - an opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  4. Silesian Region - Cluster basic data • and • 91 % of coal production in Poland • 43 % of coke production in Poland • 19,7 % of energy production in Poland • 140 thousand person employed directly in coal and power industries • more then 520 subjects dealing with coal and power industries Research and Innovation - an opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  5. ang Cluster (SICCCT) Why Coal? • Poland: • 91 % of electricity origins from coal (56 % from hard coal) • Considerable coal reserves • World: • Coal is only one recognized primary energy carrier able to fulfil the energy demand for next 200 years • coal consumption is expected to have doubled by 2030 • The share of coal used for electricity production is to increase from 39 % to 45 % by 2030 • Reasonable activities in the scope of Clean Coal Technologies Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  6. Cluster (SICCCT) Why Coal? • zmiana w światowej strukturze zużycia paliw pierwotnych : • zasoby ropy naftowej będą na wyczerpaniu, • dostęp do gazu ziemnego znacznie ograniczony • przyszłość energetyki, transportu, chemii - odejście od ropy i gazu na rzecz: węgla, biopaliw, energii odnawialnej i energii jądrowej. • epoka taniej, „brudnej” energii - energia droga i czysta • w Polsce w najbliższym czasie wymagana jest wymiana ok.30% mocy zainstalowanej w krajowych elektrowniach węglowych z uwagi na osiągniecie stanu zużycia technologicznego, • … ale wyzwanie: • radykalne zmniejszenie negatywnego oddziaływania na środowisko naturalne procesów wytwarzania energii elektrycznej i ciepła Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  7. ang Cluster (SICCCT) circumstances • High class specialists • Huge amount of S&MSE • Region problems (concentration of heavy industry) solving • The need of the generation consequence assurance in the scope of clean energy from coal Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  8. ang Cluster (SICCCT) mission Clean energy from coal • Common creation of programmes dealing with coal utilisation (conversion to energy, chemistry of coke but also chemistry) • Initiation of research projects, technology of coal utilisation and processing implementation and pilot plants • Initiation of activities dealing with participation in European research area (7 Framework Programme) • Regional and overregional promotion of coal as a clean, safe and cheap energy carrier Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  9. ang Cluster (SICCCT) mission Not only clean energy from coal • Enhancing the co-operation of industry and R&D • Unemployment decreasing • Rational utilisation of existing infrastructure Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006

  10. Cluster (SICCCT) mission • Czysta energia z węgla 1. Programy badawcze i pilotowe instalacje dotyczące • wytwarzania energii elektrycznejz sekwestracja CO2, • wytwarzania energii elektrycznej z węgla z wytwarzaniem metanolu; • wytwarzanie paliw płynnych z węgla (benzyna, oleje napędowe) 2. Aktywny udział w europejskim obszarze badawczym (7 PR) 3. Regionalne i ponadregionalna promocja węgla jako czystego, bezpiecznego i taniego nośnika energii • Nie tylko czysta energia z węgla • Współpraca nauki i przemysłu • Aktywizacja regionu • Racjonalne wykorzystanie istniejącej infrastruktury Research and Innovation - an Opportunity for Convergence Regions Warsaw, February 13th, 2006
