Touch Interface • To start a app, touch/tap the icon • Swipe is to move your finger right-left or up-down • Holding a finger on an open app brings up context menu • Two fingers to expand or shrink an image • Multitouch is using two or more fingers
Screen Technology • Capacitive touchscreens use electrical current in your body to determine movement • They measure the difference between the charge in your body and the static charge on the screen • Don’t require (re)calibration • iPad uses In-Plane Switching (IPS) – richer colors and better viewing angles
Phones • Smaller devices can use organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) displays • Apply an electric current and the organic layer glows in the precise spot desired • Black and white pattern only lights the white • Don’t use backlights • Lighter and less electricity than LCDs
Orientation • Rectangular screen can rotate so up is always up (except for the Zippo app where the flame bends and the lighter stays put on the screen) • Use accelerometer to sense orientation
Operating Systems • iOS from Apple, drives iPhone, iPad and iPod touch • Google Android runs most others • Very small Windows 7/8 presence
Apps • Enables accomplishment of a specific task • Apps not cross-platform (i.e. iOS to Android) • While you can “port” apps from iPhone to iPad, its better to “tune” them • Apple does not support Adobe Flash on mobiles – some web sites won’t work • Mobiles come with a base set of apps
Gotchas • Can only get Apple iOS apps from App Store which is controlled by Apple (no porn) • Android is “tuned” for different manufacturers which starts to look like UNIX • CompTIA mentions Touch Flow as if it were a standard feature. It’s not and it’s outdated. HTC used it
Enhancing Hardware • No can do – closed systems • No field replaceable parts (FRUs); something breaks you send whole unit back • You can plug in earbuds or speakers
Apple Expansion • Not much even though they dominate the markets • Can mirror the screen to a projector (using Apple Keynote)
Android • MicroSD slots for adding storage • Some offer bigger slots • Some even offer USB ports • Attachment for projector (mini-HDMI)
General • Wireless (Bluetooth) for keyboards, mice (not Apple) and headphones • My iMAC keyboard can synch to iPad
Config - networks • Settings app • Same as a portable computer wireless setup • Will need WPA or WPA2 logon information • Watch data plan(s) and watch roaming (charges) especially if you go out of country
Config - Bluetooth • Settings app, again • Turn on Bluetooth on mobile device • Power on the Bluetooth device • Follow on-screen directions
Config - email • Settings app • Tap Add Account for list of popular ones; choose Other for POP3 or IMAP account • Android assumes gmail account; offers an Email icon for setting other accounts
Config - Sync • Apple is simple with iCloud and Mountain Lion • Android devices are like flash drives, can share with any PC
Preventing Damage • Buy cover(s) or sleeve(s) • Don’t set heavy books on tablet • Don’t get them anywhere near liquids • Android devices support several anti-virus apps • Apple does not have an anti-virus solution – thanks to App Store
Dealing with Loss • Set a strong passcode lock required at startup • Most will lock device after failed attempts • Find your device when it attaches to Internet • iCloud for Apple down to a few yards; Google a little more • Called Locator Services
Recovering from theft • Apple is easy: Remote Wipe if you can find it with Locator Services • Android also
