    3. Benicia-Martinez bRIDGE STRUCTURE: Truss Bridge LOCATION: Connects Martinez and Benicia COST:$1.2 billion used for construction OPENED: in 1962 MATERIAL: Fine white clay called kaolin clays and fly ash

    4. Carquinez Bridge COST: $8 million to build OPENED:1927 LOCATION: Crosses Carquinez Strait STRUCTURE: Suspension bridge Other names: ZampaBridgeand Vallejo Bridge

Dumbarton Bridge OPENED 1982 LOCATION: Dumbarton Bridge crosses the Southern portion of San Francisco Bay LOCATION: State Route 84 between San Mateo and Alameda counties near Newark and East Palo Alto 1982 STRUCTURE COST: $70 million MATERIAL: Steel box girder and pre-stressed concrete approach spans

    6. Golden Gate Bridge STRUCTURE: Suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait OPEN: Construction begin January 5, 1933 END: Construction end April 19, 1937 Connects San Francisco Peninsula with Marin County

    7. Richmond-San rafael bridge LOCATION: Interstate 580 between Contra Costa and Marin counties STRUCTURE: Cantilever and truss COST: $66 million OPENED: September 1956

    8. San francisco-oakland bay bridge LOCATION: San Francisco and Oakland MATERIAL: Steel and Concrete STRUCTURE: Double- decked suspension spans OPEN: Construction began July 8,1933, West and East opened Nov 12, 1936 COST: New one cost $6.5 billion

    9. San mateo-hayward bridge LOCATION: State Route 92 between San Mateo and Alameda counties STRUCTURE: Steel box girder and concrete trestle approach spans COST: Original structure: $70 million Widened structure: $200 million
