  2. Standards: SS3G1b. Identify major mountain ranges of the United States of America: Appalachian, Rocky. What are we learning? Where are the mountain ranges located? How are the Rocky Mountains and Appalachian Mountains alike? How are they different?

  4. The Appalachians -some of the oldest mountains in the world -they’re ancient, about 500 million years old

  5. The Appalachians -they stretch from Quebec, Canada to North Georgia -it’s a range more than 2, 000 miles long

  6. The Appalachians -it is mostly forest -a lot of animals live there, like bobcats, black bears and mountain lions. -there are also lots of bats, birds and reptiles

  7. The Appalachians -many people live there, there are big cities and small towns -some people are very poor -the Appalachian culture is full of music, stories and hard work

  8. The Appalachians -a famous person who grew up in Appalachia is author Cynthia Rylant -she wrote the November book of the month, Silver Packages

  12. The Rocky Mountains -made of igneous and metamorphic rock -they’re not as old as the Appalachians, about 60 million years old

  13. The Rocky Mountains -they’re still growing! -they stretch from Alaska, through Canada to the southern United States

  14. The Rocky Mountains -the range is more than 3, 000 miles long -weathering and erosion have done some damage
