Main Ideas and Supporting Facts • Today we will work on identifying the main ideas of a passage and the facts that support it • Main Idea: a general statement that a reading is trying to get across • Supporting Facts: specific details that go to prove the Main Idea • First, look at the beginning of the passage “The Culture of the Plains Indians” on page 408-409 of your American History textbooks • Write down one main idea that these two paragraphs are trying to get across, and two supporting facts • Next, look at the passage “The Horse and the Buffalo” • Write down one main idea that these two paragraphs are trying to get across, and two supporting facts • Finally, look at the passage “Family Life” • Write down one main idea that these two paragraphs are trying to get across, and two supporting facts
