Land & Empire Rivalries –Ethnic groups resent being controlled by other powers – Powers competing for lands especially in Asia & Africa for colonies, new sources of raw materials2Nationalism: Germany, France Russia wants to defend all Slavs & is ready to support Serbia, Slavs wanted to be free of Austrian Rule, – Europe is uniting under their own flags3. Alliances: Protect nations: Triple Entente (Allied Forces)Britain, France, Russia’ Triple Alliance – Central Powers Germany, Italy, Austria4.Militarism: European powers build strong armies to keep their lands and use force to get what they wanted5. Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated by Serbian Nationalist "Black Hand”
