Unrelieved Pain and Quality of Life in Nursing Home Residents • Inadequate pain assessment and management are well documented problems • Knowledge and skill about pain assessment and management often is deficient among NH staff • There are several barriers to educating staff, including staff turnover, limited time to attend in-services, limited budgets

  3. Study Purpose • To assess the effectiveness of web-based education and support in increasing NH staff knowledge and EBP pain assessment and management Builds on the investigative team’s other projects: PERT, NA-CEP, Pain Management Algorithm

  4. Advantages of Web-based Education • Accessibility to learners • regardless of schedules, geographic location • Synchronous and asynchronous communication among learners and teachers • Relatively low cost • Learners can move at their own pace

  5. Research Plan • Conducted at one facility • Access to website for 4 months • nursing staff • staff development coordinators • Medical Director, Primary care providers • resident case managers • medication/treatment nurses • CNAs

  6. Website Resources • Web conferences • real-time and archived • Links to pain organizations and information • Ask the Expert • Tip of the Month • Literature scan

  7. Evaluation • Intervention “dosage” = website usage • Data collected • number of total users and hits • length of sessions • number of users from various groups pages viewed • Describe amount of use so as to better target specific groups in the future

  8. Evaluation • Demographics and Feedback Tool • Determine accessibility and usefulness of educational materials • Identify culturally diverse users • Characterize the sample of users • Identify if certain characteristics (e.g., role, ESL) associated with usage and perceived usefulness

  9. Evaluation • Pain Management Chart Audit Tool • Developed for, used in current study • 17 quality indicators, based on published clinical guidelines • Chart audits prior to and following website intervention to evaluate changes in assessment practices

Future Plans • Use findings from pilot to refine proposed RCT • Collaboration between Swedish investigators and Equip for Quality® • MDS software management company affiliated with the New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (NYAHSA) • Improving Assessment and Treatment of Pain in Nursing Homes: A National Nursing Collaborative (funded by the Mayday Fund)
