Opening School Procedures • Schedules- everyone must have one and signed by every teacher • Insurance – All students must have insurance or will not be able to participate in any out of school activities like fieldtrips, school dances, etc. If you play a sport you have to fill out a different insurance form. • Emergency contact card- fill out with most recent information • Free and Reduced Lunch applications- All students must return even if your parents don’t want it. You can now apply online. • Lunch Schedule/Breakfast (Breakfast available for all students. $1.75-regular price; $.30- Reduced Lunch; $0- Free Lunch) • Code of Excellence

Opening School Procedures • Parent Contract- Signature page • Welcome letter from the principal • After Care- If your parents cannot pick you up after school, you can sign up for after care where there will be homework help, sports, a game room, arts and crafts, etc. ($40/week) • School year at a Glance calendar • Video and Publication form • Uniform Policy • Cell Phone Policy • Ids

Absences • After you have been absent 5 times in a semester , you will need a doctor’s note. • If you have 5 unexcused absences in a semester OR 10 unexcused absences in a year, we may be able to withhold your final grade • Students will get a failing grade for any work not turned in for unexcused absences • Absent Notification Form must be turned in within three days of coming back to school (can be found in the Mater Website)

  7. Tardy Policy • School begins promptly at 7:30 am and students should be sitting in their seats awaiting instruction when the bell rings • Students who arrive between 7:30-7:35 will be admitted to the classroom and marked unexcused tardy • 1-3 unexcused tardy- Warning • 4-5 unexcused tardy- School detention • 6 or more unexcused tardy- Referral • The number of unexcused tardies is reset every nine weeks • Students arriving between 7:35-8:20 will report to the Tardy Center in the Cafeteria • Students arriving after 8:20 will report to the Attendance Office • May not enter my classroom after 7:35 without a pass • After more than 5 excused tardies- you will need a doctor’s note.

Trouble • Detentions are every Monday and Thursday from 2:35- 3:45 pm • If you miss your detention, the administration gives you another detention. • If you miss both detentions, you get a SATURDAY DETENTION. • If you miss Saturday, you get a Referral. Referrals are very bad and go on your school record.

  9. 1.Reading (short stories, novels, etc.) 2.Writing (prompts, quickwrites & applying the writing process with embedded assessments) 3. Speaking (group presentations, oral reading, etc.) What will I be doing this year? Common Core Workbook: Is a supplemental reading curriculum program designed to provide differentiated instruction for the new Common Core Standards. Writing & Grammar Book: Is designed to introduce and provide practice for writing rules and grammar. Literature Book: Contains all the genres of writing as well as writing tips and lessons. Springboard: We will not be using the springboard in this class, but we will be aligning our standards to the Springboard you will be using in Language Arts. Timed Reading: Contains sample passages with comprehension questions similar to those on the FCAT exam. Novels: Each Nine weeks we will be reading and analyzing a novel including vocabulary for each novel.

  10. How will I be graded? A= 90-100% B= 80-89% C= 70-79% D= 60-69% F= 59 and below Tests: 25% Quizzes: 15% Class Work: 35% Home Learning: 25%

  11. What are the rules in this classroom? 1. Be in your seat, quiet, and ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Check the board and read instructions before asking questions. 3. Be prepared with your materials and assignments. 4. Be on task and educationally oriented. 5. Follow classroom procedures.

  12. Consequences? Verbal Warning Check Mark(s) on Discipline Chart Notify parent/guardian Detention Referral (given if you have received 2 or more detentions from me) *I have a discipline chart. After two strikes the parent gets notified. Once the child reaches the “D” column on the chart, he/she is given a detention with a phone call home. *Detentions are served every Monday and Thursday after school in the auditorium.

  13. Discipline Chart If I have to call you to get your attention because you are not paying attention you will get marked on the discipline chart This Discipline chart will determine your conduct grade at the end of each quarter.

  14. Home Learning You will have homework on a frequent basis. Homework is due the following class unless noted Otherwise. HOMEWORK IS MANDATORY! I will not accept any late work. Exception : Excused absences. If you have an excused absence you have one week to make up your work. Extra Credit : I will give extra credit assignments at my discretion

  15. Bathroom You may NOT use the restroom in the first 15 minutes of class or the last 15 minutes of class. You have 5 minutes before and after class, in the morning, during lunch, and after school to use the restroom. Bathrooms are for emergencies ONLY. If you want water, you may bring a water bottle to my classroom.

Supplies • Flash Drive (to save all your work) • College ruled lined paper • 2 Composition notebook (any color) • Reinforcements • 3 Ring Binder 1 Inch with 5 tabs (labeled “Grammar, Vocabulary, Lit. Book, Classnotes & Handouts, and Common Core”) • Pocket Folder w/3 prong (labeled “Essays”) • Pocket Folder w/3 prong (labeled “Research paper”) • Pencil case with black, blue, red pens and pencils (can use for other classes) • Hi-lighters (need all colors) • White out and eraser • Sheet protectors • Colored Markers and/or colored pencils • Index cards (3 x 5) • Construction paper • Sticky notes Please have the following supplies. Make sure everything has your name on it and is labeled properly. **All students MUST have access to a computer and printer at all times throughout the academic school year. All essays MUST be typed and printed.

  17. Wish List For every $3 you spend you get 1 hour of volunteer service for Mater Academy. Every parent needs 30 hours of volunteer hours or $90 in teacher donation items. (When purchasing item(s) make sure child’s name, student ID and teacher is listed in the bag along with the receipt and give to me) -Gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Barnes and Noble, or Staples. -Bags of Assorted Candy/Chocolate -HP Laser Jet 1020 Ink Cartridge -GermX, Tissues, & Wipes You can view my list my website.

  18. How do I know if Ms. Castro wants my attention? I will stand in the front of the class and ring the bell or flick the lights on and off. Everyone will have their eyes on me silently waiting until the whole class is quiet.

  19. What do I do when I get to class? If you have a Question or need to talk to me about something…write me a sticky note, leave it on your desk and I will pick it up after the bell ringer activity • Put your book bag down • Sharpen pencil BEFORE bell rings • Look at the board and observe the Agenda for the day • Begin Bell Ringer activity

  20. What do I do when the bell rings to go to my next class? You will pack up your bookbag when I tell you to pack up. I will dismiss you…NOT the sound of the bell. Once I dismiss you, you look under your desk and make sure that everything is clean around your desk. Put all books back in their proper place. You will be dismissed by tables.

  21. What do I do during a class discussion? Everyone will get a chance to speak if you don’t interrupt someone while they are speaking. You raise your hand and silently wait your turn to speak and contribute to the conversation.

  22. What do I do if I need to get out of my seat? You may only get out of your seat without permission if you need to get a tissue, germX, or throw something away.

  23. What do I do if I get to class late? Please enter quietly If you have a note, please place it on my desk. If you do not, please see me after class. Take out your materials and wait for my instructions.

  24. What do I do if I finish my work early? -Read a book silently -Work on homework for the following class -Go over anything you may not have understood (vocabulary words, literary terms or concepts, etc.)
