Explain one thing you learned about each of the following (Ch 7,8): • Lowell Girls • Slave life in the South • Trail of Tears TODAY: Finishing presentations / begin going over study guide for Thursday’s exam. Notebooks also due Thursday.

  3. Slavery Terms • Abolitionists – Wanted to abolish (end) slavery. Knew slavery was morally wrong. • Plantation – large-scale farm. Many in the South contained slaves. • Underground railroad – secret chain of locations on escape route from the South to Canada. • Harriet Tubman - led more slaves to freedom on U.R. than anyone else.

  4. Crops tended by slaves • Upper South – Region did not have long enough growing season for cotton. Tobacco, corn, hemp were most profitable. • Lower South – Cotton was the cash crop. Planters began growing it in the late 1600s. Sugarcane was also profitable.

  6. Slave Revolts • Denmark Vessey - Free Af-Am carpenter and preacher. Planned a huge slave uprising near Charleston • Nat Turner - led a violent slave result in Virginia soon after. Killed 60 whites in the area.
