  1. Welcome Back to School Mrs. Erin Hanley 1st Period: Pre-Algebra 2nd Period: Pre-Algebra 3rd Period: Algebra 7 4th Period: Algebra 7 5th Period: Algebra Readiness lab

  2. Education • BA in Mathematics from CSU Stanislaus • Single Subject Math Credential from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo • Currently working on Masters in Math Education at CSU Northridge • Professional • Fourth year teaching • Third year teaching at Mesa Union Background Information

  3. Foundation • Language • Solving Linear Equations • Linear Functions • Functions and Patterns • Linear Equations – graphs, slope and intercepts • Solving Systems • Solving Linear Inequalities • Polynomials and Nonlinear Functions • Polynomials • Factoring • Quadratic Functions • Advanced Expressions • Radical Expressions • Rational Expressions and Equations Algebra 7 Course Outline This is a brief overview of the subjects we will be covering in Algebra 7 this year.

  4. Typical Daily Schedule • Opener • HW Check • HW score should be written on their calendar • Students check odd problems at home • Should a student earn ZAP, he/she is required to get a signature • Complete warm-up • Homework Questions • Lesson • Students will not always receive notes • Students will always have time to practice new material • Lessons will incorporate higher-level thinking skills

  5. Homework Policy • There will be homework almost every night • HW will not be assigned the day that we take a test • Lunchtime HW help • Homework is checked on a daily basis • ZAP for students who did not complete assignment • ZAP for students who did not earn 70% or higher on the assignment • Homework calendar due the day we complete a chapter • All homework assignments are checked on a credit/no credit basis

  6. Grading Policy Standards Based Grading Traditional Grading Assessments based on chapters in the textbook Students take one large test with a combination of skills Students are not tested on material again after the chapter test Late learners do not get a second chance to practice more and try again. Students see an arbitrary letter grade. Assessments based on specific skills Students take short quizzes on individual skills to demonstrate proficiency Students must demonstrate proficiency of each skill again on a quarter final Late learners have the opportunity to practice and reassess Students see skills they need to know

  7. Standards Based Grading • Student grades are based on their proficiency of Algebra skills • Weighted Categories • Skills Assessments – 70% • Assignments – 20% • Summative Quarter Final – 10% • Assessments and Reassessments • Assessments are given after students learn and study an Algebra skill • Assessments are graded on a 0-4 scale • Reassessments are during lunch Tuesday-Friday • I keep their most recent score Grading Policy We have converted the grading practices in all Mesa Algebra classes . Instead of a traditional grading policy, your student will have the benefit of Standards Based Grading.

  8. Classroom Rules and Consequences Consequences Rules Show up on time Be prepared for class Participate Maintain behavior that enables all to learn • Zap • If student does not do HW assignment • Honor Card Mark • Detention • Lunch detention Thursday • After-school detention on Friday • Administrative Referral

  9. Important Information • Attendance • Missing class means students miss skills • Absentee Packets • Students are responsible for picking their packet up in the office ASAP • They must remember to turn in work, we won’t remind them • Checking Student Progress • Check your students HW calendar and agenda daily • Check Zangle at least every other week • Tutoring Hours • Thursday from 2:50-3:50 • Please arrange for your student to be picked up at 3:50
