  3. What is a BIOME? • A large region categorized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities.

  4. Tundra • Desert • Savannah • Temperate Grassland • Taiga (Coniferous Forest) • Temperate (Deciduous) Forest • Tropical Forest

  5. Tundra • Desert • Savannah • Temperate Grassland • Taiga (Coniferous Forest) • Temperate (Deciduous) Forest • Tropical Forest

  6. Tundra • A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America where the subsoil is permanently frozen

  7. Tundra Characteristics • Rainfall: Low • Temperature: Cold

  8. Tundra Vegetation • Too cold for trees to grow • Very Limited soil • Examples of Plants: Mosses and Lichens • These can grow without soil

  9.  Moss Lichens 

  10. Animals of the Tundra • Worms • Caribou (reindeer) • Wolves • Small animals such as mice and lemmings

  11. Tundra • Desert • Savannah • Temperate Grassland • Taiga (Coniferous Forest) • Temperate (Deciduous) Forest • Tropical Forest

  12. Desert Biome • A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.

  13. Desert Characteristics • Rainfall: Low • Temperature: High

  14. Desert Vegetation • All desert plants have adaptations for obtaining and conserving water • Examples: • Cactuses • Shrubs

  15. Desert Animals • Desert animals have thick, fleshy skins that prevent water loss. • Most are nocturnal • Examples: • Gila Monsters • Rattlesnakes • Elf Owl

  16. Tundra • Desert • Savannah • Temperate Grassland • Taiga (Coniferous Forest) • Temperate (Deciduous) Forest • Tropical Forest

  17. Savannah • Savannah: A grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees

  18. Savannah Characteristics • Temperature: Hot • Rainfall: Moderate • Dry and Wet seasons

  19. Plants of the Savannah • Plants only grow during the wet season, which lasts only a couple of months • Grasses • Trees

  20. Animals of the Savannah • Herbivores: Animals that only eat leaves/veggies • Examples: • Elephants • Rhinos • Gazelles

  21. Tundra • Desert • Savannah • Temperate Grassland • Taiga (Coniferous Forest) • Temperate (Deciduous) Forest • Tropical Forest

  22. Temperate Grassland • Areas of open grassland with very few trees, located in colder climates

  23. Temperate Grassland Characteristics • Rainfall: Moderate • Temperature: Hot Summers, Cold Winters

  24. Plants of the Temperate Grassland • Fertile soil and temperature allow grasslands to be very productive • Ex: Grasses and wildflowers

  25. Animals of the Temperate Grassland • Grazing animals such as Antelopes and Bison • Large teeth adapted for chewing grass
