  11. Step One: Formal Education • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution • A listing of accredited Health Information Management programs across the country can be obtained from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)www.ahima.org/careers/

  12. Step Two: Certification • Pass a certification examination and earn a health information management credential

Why a Credential? • Demonstrates to co-workers and supervisors a dedication to quality healthcare and the highest standards of Health Information Management • Tells employers that you have been trained and tested to implement best practices and apply current technology solutions • Sets you apart from job candidates who are not credentialed

  14. RHIA – Registered Health Information Administrator • Requires a bachelor’s degree • Frequently leads to a management level position requiring plenty of interaction with colleagues on the medical, financial and administrative staff

  15. RHIT – Registered Health Information Technician • Requires an associate’s degree • RHITs often get jobs analyzing data, reporting patient information and working on reimbursement
