  1. Available Model Runs 1) GMI aura2 combo chem, ASM winds, off line, 42 lev 2) CTM e701 (1 y) GSFC chem, ASM winds, off line, 28 lev 3) CTM e619 (50-y run) GSFC chem, FVGCM winds, off line, 28 lev 4) CGCM ts2000 GSFC chem, interactive, on line, 55 lev 5) GMI FVGCM_9498 combo chem, FVGCM winds, off line, 42 lev All 2x2.5, within 1990-2006. Compare to McPeters et al. climo, OMI.

  2. Aura2 e701 Climo Diff

  3. Preview seasonal cycle line plots.

  4. ASM Simulation Comparison • Meteorology (ASM vs GCM) dominates total O3 distribution, seasonal cycle. • Largest column O3 differences from climo are in SH mid latitudes with ASM winds and either chemistry. • ASM always too high at mid/high lats, but less so with combo-chem. • Tropics are close to observed.

  5. e619 ts2000 Climo diff

  6. FVGCM Combo Climo diff

  7. Preview seasonal cycle line plots.

  8. GCM Simulation Comparison • CGCM and 50-y GCM/CTM are generally similar to each other. • CGCM and 50-y CTM (GSFC chem) show significant O3 hole lag. Other simulations do not. • GCM simulations with GSFC chem show large excess column O3 at SH mid/high lats (similar to ASM). NH excess is not as large as ASM. • Tropics are close to observed.

  9. Combo chem makes less ozone globally. Ozone hole appears a little late. NH lower strat is always positive, but offset by negative above in some months.

  10. Chemistry Comparison • Combo chem: • With GCM total O3 is too low almost everywhere. • Significantly low in SH high lats (except O3 hole) and between subtropics • Unusually good total O3 seasonal cycle at high lat NH • Why no delay in SH ozone hole break-up?
