Problem-Solving StrategyLook for a Pattern By Mr. Bales
Objective • By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve problems using the look for a pattern strategy. • Standard 4MG3.0 - Students demonstrate an understanding of plane and solid geometric objects and use this knowledge to show relationships and solve problems. • Standard 4MR1.1 - Analyze problems by …..observing patterns.
Introduce • Chloe gave her sister 4 hats last week. She gave her best friend 2 hats yesterday. Chloe’s mom gave her 5 new hats this morning. Chloe now has 12 hats. How many hats did Chloe have originally? • What strategy would you use to solve this problem? Why?
Teach • Noah is helping his dad put tile on a table. They are laying the tiles in a pattern. They have run out of tiles and need to buy some more. What color of tiles need to be purchased to complete the table? • We need to UPSC - Understand, Plan, Solve, and Check
Step 1 - Understand • Noah is helping his dad put tile on a table. They are laying the tiles in a pattern. They have run out of tiles and need to buy some more. What color of tiles need to be purchased to complete the table? • What facts do we know? • You know the tiles form a pattern. • You know they need to buy more tiles. • What do you need to find? • Find the tile colors that need to be purchased.
Step 2 - Plan • Look for a pattern. Then continue your pattern to find the missing tiles.
Step 3 - Solve • Noah is helping his dad put tile on a table. They are laying the tiles in a pattern. They have run out of tiles and need to buy some more. What color of tiles need to be purchased to complete the table? • There are two rows of tiles and the tiles repeat red, green, blue, and yellow. • In the first row, the missing tiles are blue and green. In the second row, the missing tiles are red, blue, and yellow. • So, Noah and his father need 2 blue, 1 green, 1 red, and 1 yellow tile.
Step 4 - Check • Noah is helping his dad put tile on a table. They are laying the tiles in a pattern. They have run out of tiles and need to buy some more. What color of tiles need to be purchased to complete the table? • Look back at the problem. • The answer make sense for the facts given. So, the answer is correct.
Chance Tickets • Your mom has decided to give you some money. On the first day, she gives you a penny. On the second day, she gives you two more pennies.
