  1. A Storm of Kings Welcome to Northerland

  2. Welcome • What is ‘A Storm of Kings’? • How does it work? • Where/When/What is ‘Northerland’? • How will I work on it? • Where will I store my work? • Do I still need to write?

  3. What is ‘A Storm of Kings’? • A Storm of Kings is an interactive iBook designed to live on your iPad and store sections of work. • You can start to download it by opening the iBooks app, going into the store and searching for ‘A Storm of Kings’. • It might be busy in this lesson but make sure it’s downloaded before your next English lesson.

  4. How does it work? • You will complete each Chapter of the book being guided by your teacher. You must complete a chapter before moving on to the next one. • There are activities and objectives for each chapter that will help you build your own ‘House’ or ‘Family’ to live in the fictional country of Northerland.

  5. Where/When/What is ‘Northerland’? • Northerland is a fictional medieval country. • It is huge! So big it covers every type of landscape and habitat known to man!

  6. Medieval: Group Discussion • First, without your iPads, in 3 minutes come up with as much as you can about medieval times. • What were they like? • What did people have/not have? • How long would they expect to live? • What kind of conditions would they live in? • Rich vs Poor, what would be the difference? • How would they speak? • Now use your pad for 3 minutes, what extra info have you got?

  7. How Will I Work on it? • The book contains lots of ‘widgets’. • Widgets are little computer programs that let you do all sorts of pieces of work, store them, picture them and send them to your teacher. Like a ready made exercise activity book. • It is your job to keep a record of all your work and make sure your iPad is backed up weekly at least. • You can record with screenshots and showbie.

  8. Where will I store my work? • Your work will sometimes be written/drawn on paper. Sometimes it will be in a widget. Mostly it will be in your Storm of Kings iBook. • At the end of each chapter you will do a final piece of work. This will be put into a Book Creator book which your teacher can view via Showbie. • This Book Creator book will be a history of your House, a family story!

  9. Do I still need to write? • Writing is tremendously important. Nowhere more than Northerland. • Discussion Point: Why would writing be so important in Northerland, the medieval country? • So yes, you will need to write. You will need to write to the best of your ability. The survival of your family will depend on it.

  10. What do I need to do to start? • Before the next lesson make sure you have downloaded the Storm of Kings iBook from the iBook store. • Be ready to have lots of ideas. You’ll need them to survive the coming storm…
