The Birth of the Internet The concept of the Internet dates back to the 1960s when the U.S. Department of Defense initiated a project called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). ARPANET was designed to enable researchers to share information and access remote computers. The network’s decentralized structure made it resilient to potential disruptions, such as those caused by natural disasters or cyber-attacks. The Evolution of the Internet As technology advanced, so did the Internet. In the 1980s, the introduction of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) standardized communication between computers.
