Evolution Leadership Qualities Framework • Fifteen qualities, arranged in three clusters • Each quality defined at levels that identify both effective and outstanding leaders • The highest levels relate to the expected behaviours demonstrated by outstanding chief executives within the NHS • Launched in 2002 Paul W Long Consulting

MLCF Medical Leadership Competency Framework • Jointly developed by Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and NHS Institute • First in use in 2008 now with 2 further ed. • Describes leadership competences for doctors • Applies to all medical students and doctors • Being used to inform formal education and training curricula • Being progressively embedded into regulation Paul W Long Consulting

Aim and objectives Phase One • Develop a generic ‘clinical’ competency framework which related to all clinical professions • Consultation and interviews with individuals within the profession bodies and frontline clinicians - using semi-structured questions, to gather data to inform the position of each clinical profession, as well as, the overall findings. • Review of documentation – the project team reviewed curricula guidance, standards and frameworks relating to education and training, learning and development activity as well as performance assessment tools  Phase two • Develop a Leadership Framework which is applicable to all the workforce • Products and tools to support adoption Paul W Long Consulting

  14. Supporting products and resources For Individuals Online 360° diagnostic: Over 800 users registered, 391 of which are clinicians. Planned that 675 Midwives from NHS North West will undertake the 360° as part of a leadership programme. Self Assessment tools: Over 17,000 downloads. Being used in a number of courses and programmes to help students/participants assess their leadership skills prior to commencement, and often re-assessing at completion. Versions freely available for clinicians, doctors and wider workforce. Leadership Development Module: Freely available, particularly useful after undergoing 360° or self assessment as signposts specific activities to help develop against particular elements of the framework. LeAD (e-learning modules): Freely available, targeted e-learning for doctors and clinicians. Case studies: A range now available, including how individuals as well as organisations are using the CLCF/LF to inform their work. Results Successfully gained agreement from all the stakeholders on the LF Created the Leadership Framework and clinical versions The LF was launched by the SoS in July 2011 First time in the UK that there is a common and consistent standard of leadership The framework, tools and resources are widely available in the UK and there is a high level of awareness and excellent examples of adoption Paul W Long Consulting
