  1. The Person and Work of God the Son

  2. TEXT: I Timothy 3:16 The mystery of the “hypostatic union” which is the clear teaching of Scripture, that the Lord Jesus was fully God and became fully man, can be more clearly understood in the answers to these questions:

  3. I. Was any Deity or humanity changed? A. The Deity of Christ was as full and complete after the incarnation as before (John 10:30; 14:9-11) B. Though He was God eternal, His humanity was gained in time (Heb 12:2) C. That humanity is everlasting from the point of His birth, but not eternal (Phil 2:9; Luke 24:39)

  4. II. What is unique about Christ’s humanity? A. He remained God 1. He was a unique child (Luke 2:19) 2. He was never not God (Luke 2:40, 47) 3. He was impeccable – He could not sin (cf Titus 1:2; Num 23:19) B. His humanity was required with Deity to save the lost C. The Creator, helpless in a mother’s arms requires Faith, but it is the evidence of God’s grace

  5. III. What was the relationship of the God/Man? A. To the Father and Spirit He remains co-equal and co-eternal while relying upon Them in His humanity 1. The Spirit descended upon Him (Matt 3:16) 2. He filledChrist (Isa 61:3 cf Luke 4:18) 3. Christ was subject to the Father (John 8:29)

  6. B. To the angels, holy and fallen, He retained His position and authority (Matt 4:11; Matt 8:29) C. To humanity He was God manifest in the flesh (1 Tim 3:16) “Immanuel…God with us” D. To sin and the sin nature He was holy (Luke 1:35) and without sin (John 8:46)

  7. Thus it is, in the words of our text, a “great mystery” and yet, in the eternal plan of God it is the revelation of God’s grace and the instruction of what our behavior ought to be as we have the foundation of the “pillar and ground of truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).
