  1. Painting FAI / LAI Inspection 9/29/06 rev.2 Team Members Shane Wilson Stella Huang Karl Lu Henry Cheng

  2. Objective Verify the consistency of painting quality during mass production by FAI (First Article Inspection) and LAI (Last Article Inspection)

  3. Definition First Article The 1st part under mass production condition when • Start a new production run • Raw material added to the production line. Example would be adding new pot of paint to paint line due to viscosity or exceeded pot life. • Process parameter adjustment • Recovery production after an hour or longer shut down Purpose • The FAI will approve the process for mass production

  4. Definition Last Article The last part of a particular production run, for example • End of a production order • Before raw material added to production line • Temporary production shut down Purpose • The LAI will approve the parts for shipment to the next integration location. • The LAI sample will also be used for IQC purposes when shipped to the ODM.

  5. Sub-Tier Actions Required • Documented the procedure of FAI/LAI. • 5W1H • FAI/LAI sample identification • Traceability between FAI/LAI and products • Ensure the products are not moved to next station before LAI be approved • Recall method whenever nonconformance and/or failures are found • This process will be used on all cosmetically painted, plated or ink transfer parts. • Normal in-process samples will be pulled and tested as defined by PMP • LAI will be placed in the shipment to the ODM to be used for IQC acceptance. • Due Date: 18th Oct

  6. ODM Action Required • Review and approve sub-tiers FAI/LAI procedure • Make sure the procedure are followed by sub-tier • Verify LAI sample in IQC • ODM will still be responsible to pull a random sample as defined in their PMP and perform the same testing for Color, Gloss & 85FMR compliance. • Feedback to GCQM & Sustain GSQM the plan no later than 20th Oct, and approve by Dell SEQ. Retention Period • ODM will retain the LAI sample for a minimum of 90 days at their factory • Odm will retain the Drop Shipment LAI for a minimum or 90 days at their factory

  7. An Example of FAI/LAI Identification Paint Lot Production lot no. Line FAI/LAI identification • Note: • Paint Lot: means the paint supplier lot number; • Production lot no.: It is paint applicator lot no, which can trace back to the production date, the specific lot no of that day; • Line: It is the parts production line identification of applicator production line; • FAI/LAI identification: Just put the identification mark, thus, FAI or LAI can be identified easily; • Sub-tier one shipping lot may include N production lots, thus, there is N LAI need to attached. • Sub-tier may follow above rule for labeling or another way, but above information should be included.
