  • McClellan tries to recapture Richmond but is forced to retreat by Lee’s army in the Seven Days’ Battle
  • August, 1862 – Confederacy wins second victory at Bull Run
  • Lee ended the Union threat in Virginia

  • Hoped victory in North would force Lincoln to talk peace
  • Invasion would give Virginia farmers a rest from war during the harvest season
