  2. Intel 4004 (Nov 15, 1971) First single chip CPU, it was a 4-bit, 16-pin microprocessor. This chip could execute up to 92,600 instructions per second. This used state-of-the-art Silicon Gate Technology PMOS logic, the world’s first metal-oxide silicon process. This was a major breakthrough.

  3. Intel 8086 (1978) It was a 16-bit processor and contained 29,000 transistors and 20 address lines that allowed it to talk with up to 1 MB of RAM. It became an industry standard.

  4. Intel 8088 (1979) It is identical to the previous one, except that it was chosen for the first IBM PC. Like the 8086, it is able to work with the 8087 math processor chip.

  5. NEC V20 and V30 (1980) Pretty much the same as the 8088 and the 8086, but are supposed to be about 30% faster.

  6. Intel 80186 (1980) This was a popular chip. Buyers could choose from CHMOS or HMOS, 8-bit or 16-bit versions, depending on what they needed.

  7. Intel 80286 (1982) A 16-bit, 134,000 transistor processor capable of addressing up to 16 MB of RAM. This chip is able to work with virtual memory. It was the first “real” processor. It introduced the concept of protected mode.

  8. Intel 80386 (1985-1990) The 386 signified a major increase in technology from Intel. Its data throughput was twice that of the 286. It was also the first chip to use instruction pipelining, which allows the processor to start working on the next instruction before the previous one is complete. It was designed to be user friendly.

  9. Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-E (November 2011) Primarily developed by the Israel branch of Intel, it had a codename of Gesher. It has increased performance and twice the integrated graphics performance compared to Clarkdale’s.
