  1. Horror • The Lighthouse • The narrative • There is a very dark atmosphere at the start that you feel will carry on throughout the film. • Target Audience • Male- all characters are male, and the film seems scary so stereotypically has a male skew. • 30+years • White race-all characters shown are white. • Genre of the film set up in the first sequence • Horror- black and white connotes the film is vintage and creepy. • Psychological Thriller- diegetic foghorn blaring is very eerie. Opening scene:

  2. Characters • We are shown 6 characters all men, but the focus is on only two of those men. • Two black figures on the boat- connotes death and depression, suggests they are depressing characters. • There is a medium shot of the two characters- we get the impression that they are conservative and quiet. • The low-key lighting makes it feel scary, dark and trapped. • Close up of boat crashing against waves connotes a storm, suggesting there will be a traumatic event. • Shot in black and white giving the film a dark tone. • Diegetic sound of blaring of the foghorn which makes it feel dangerous and scary as you are not aware of the surroundings. • I think it is a successful opening scene because it gives subtle actions and noises to make you feel uneasy, giving a sense of what the film will be like but not everything is given away and therefore, still quite mysterious. However, you could argue that the opening scene is too inactive making the film slightly boring.
