How have I used conventions and represented social groups? By Maddie McDonald
What is a convention? • Genre conventions are elements/structures, either symbolic (mise-en-scene) or technical (camera work, editing and sound), that are common to specific genres within a media product that defines a genre, and in which lays out the audiences' expectations. They also give institutions a set of guidelines/ rules when creating their media product. • E.g., a key technical convention for a thriller genre high camera angles on vulnerable characters.
Our chosen genre • The genre that we have made is mystery. • The genre conventions of a mystery film are: • close-up shots or extreme close-up shots are used to show peoples emotions to discovering something mysterious. • The lighting for crime films is mostly naturalistic and but low-key lighting is used when you see the villain to obstruct his/hers face from the audience' view. • The main character is usually the one doing the detective work. • Usually there are action codes such as guns or blood but in our opening scene we had a USB as our action code.

Characters in ‘The fathers message’ Max Wright-Son Stuart Butcher-Dad
Sound • Non-diegeticeerie, tensionbuilding music playing throughout the Iron Man 2 scene. • This creates a dramatic and emotional climax of Howard Stark talking to Tony Stark. • In ‘The Fathers Message’ we used non-diegetic sad emotional piano music that we found off YouTube. This music really emphasized the emotion and drama in our opening scene. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzXCyO0DcyU • With the diegetic sound of the father’s speech used the same sound that we used throughout the opening scene but slowed it down and with a bit of adjusting to the db and pitch until we were with happy with how it sounded.
sound • In Knifes Out the there is non-diegetic instrumental music. It is fast paced with a mixture of high-pitched and low-pitched sounds. • This instantly creates tension for the audience making them question what is about to happen. • Similarly in my opening scene we used non-diegetic instrumental music however in contrast to Knifes Out fast paced music ours was slow and emotional. • We did this because it was really fitting for our sequence as the message the father leaves for the son is emotional however, it doesn’t eliminate the enigma behind the USB.
