  1. Final Presentation Mariah McKee English 1101

  2. Starting from the beginning… • I had a positive attitude coming into this class at the beginning of this semester. Even though I have never been one who loves to read or write, I was excited about what we were going to be doing as a class. I wanted to try to become more interested in writing and to grow as a writer. • I have never been one to be fully satisfied with my writing. I always feel like it is not as good or creative as my peers and classmates. But, through this class, I feel like I have grown and I am now more accepting of my writing. • I have realized that I should not compare my work to others and should write to the best of my ability and to be happy with the outcome.

  3. Goals I Had For Myself • One main goal that I had for myself since the beginning was to do my best and not procrastinate. • - I wanted to get all of my work done ahead of time so I would not feel rushed and so I would feel like I did my best work. • Another goal that I had for myself was to work to feel more confident with my writing and to not be as nervous to share my work with other people. The first time that we peer reviewed, I was nervous to read my work in front of my partners because I was afraid of what they would think of my writing.

  4. Favorite Writing From the Semester • My favorite piece of writing that I did was the Literacy Memoir Narrative. It was my favorite because I got to tell my story and explain how I became the literate person that I am today and also tell about who has helped me along the way; which would be my mom and my close group of friends. • My Literacy Memoir was the piece of writing that I took to the writing center. I received help from Tyler. He read my paper out loud and would stop when we came to a place that he thought we should take time to work on. He did not just go through it and fix things that he thought that should be fixed, but would ask me questions about what I thought we should change it to and was extremely helpful with making my paper stronger.

  5. “I came from a family that is all about school. My mom is a schoolteacher so she has always pushed me and helped me along the way to do that best that I could do in school. I have always strived to do my best; number one, for me of course so I could make good grades and get into the school that I wanted to get into, and number two, for my mom who’s name is Angela. She is normal height and she has shorter dark brown hair. She is skinny and very pretty. She has a comforting voice but can also be very stern when she wants to be; she calls it her “teaching voice”. I have always wanted to make her proud of me and for her to know that I have given it my all and tried my best.”

  6. “My best friends and I played soccer together and we had about two hours after school everyday before practice, so we would find a place to go and would work on our homework and study together until it was time to go to practice. My friends are like my backbone and I don’t know where I would be without them. We have always pushed each other to succeed and do well in school and also fuss at each other if one of us does not do as good as we could have. When we have papers due for a class, we get each other to peer review it and to make sure that it is good enough before we turn it in.”

  7. Get out your writer’s notebook! • Take a few minutes to write about who has helped you grow into the literate person that you are and why.

  8. Why I Write • “Why I Write” stuck out to me this semester. It made me really think of who I am as a writer and why I write. A few examples that explain why I write are: • “I write because it allows me to reflect on my life and memories that I have.” • I write because it allows keep my thoughts and ideas together.” • “I write because it allows me to tell my story.”

  9. Things I Will Take From This Class • One of the main things that I will take from this English 1101 class and apply to my writing in the future will be information from “Shitty First Drafts”. I learned that it does not matter how crappy my first drafts are or how many drafts that I have to make until my final draft is complete. • I will also take with me the information from “The 5 Paragraph Essay.” This essay taught me that I do not have to stick to the standard format of writing and can be more creative with my writing. It also allows me to be able to express myself more freely with my work.
