  2. This series of PowerPoint slides will outline the deposit process for the DalSpace institutional repository.

  3. Before a person can deposit to DalSpace, s/he must register as a depositor and provide the DalSpace team with information about department affiliation and the type of item(s) to be deposited. There is more information about how to do this at: www.library.dal.ca/DalSpace/

  4. Once this information has been sent, a member of the DalSpace team will contact the newly registered depositor.

  5. The DalSpace team will set up the “Community” and the “Collections” within which a depositor has authorization to make deposits. • A Community will generally correspond to a Dalhousie academic or administrative unit. e.g. Faculty of Computer Science • Each Community will have “Collections.” As examples: Faculty Research & Publications, Image Collection, etc. • Deposits made to DalSpace must be entered into a “Collection” affiliated with a “Community.”

  6. When a member of a department/unit has been recognized as an authorized depositor, and the Community and Collection have been set up, the depositor can submit material to DalSpace as follows: Go to: http://www.libraries.dal.ca Click on the Collections link and then on the DalSpace link.

  7. Click on “Access DalSpace Collections here”

  8. Click on Login button DalSpace http://dalspace.library.dal.ca/

  9. Enter email address and password, and click on “Sign in” button.

  10. Click on Submissions button at lower left.

  11. Start a submission by clicking on the “start a new submission” link

  12. Select the relevant collection. (Collections must be set up for the depositor in advance by the DalSpace team.) Click on Next.

  13. Respond to initial questions, and click on Next.

  14. Enter information about the item (Describe item)

  15. Continue to describe item and then click on Next

  16. Browse to identify relevant file. Upload the file.

  17. Confirm that the correct file is loaded. If so, click on Next.

  18. Confirm that all relevant fields contain information and that the information is entered correctly.

  19. Correct any fields that require edits. Click on Next.

  20. Read the license agreement

  21. Grant the license & complete the submission

  22. If you prefer to save the submission and work on it later, at the bottom of the license screen, click on Save and Exit… You can choose to Save and return to work on the submission later.

  23. You will then be asked to make a selection from the three choices at the bottom of the screen. Select one

  24. Submission / Approval After submission: • If your deposited item has to be approved, it enters an approval queue. • If your deposited item doesn’t require approvals, it will enter DalSpace immediately.

  25. When an item is contained in DalSpace, you can locate it by checking the DalSpace Collection to which it was deposited.

  26. Once you have identified it, click on the item title.

  27. To link to the item or to cite it, use the “handle” URI, which represents a permanent link to the item. eg: http://hdl.handle.net/10222/10115
