RETELL Instructor Opportunity Job Description AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY FOR OUSTANDING TEACHERS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS TO TRANSFORM PUBLIC EDUCATION IN MASSACHUSETTS • Scope of the Work • 45 hours of instruction per course taught. Each course delivered by an Instructor consists of 11 in-person sessions and 5 on-line sessions. • Participation in the Instructors’ training program (3 days with 2 additional days at a later date) • Grading participants’ homework and assessments and determining final grades. • Participation in planning and evaluation sessions scheduled by ESE. • Course-related record keeping. • Compensation • $5,500 for each section taught in Year One. $5,000 for each section taught in subsequent years. Compensation is higher in Year One while Instructors learn how to use the on-line instructional tools. • $200 per day for the five training dates. ESE is looking for outstanding professional development instructors to participate on the team delivering this program. If you are an expert instructor of English as a second language, have an understanding of the Common Core Standards, and have experience providing professional development, please consider applying to join the corps of instructors for this transformational program. As part of its RETELL Program, Rethinking Equity and Teaching for English Language Learners, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) is implementing an ambitious new professional development program for the state’s educators. Under the RETELL program, every core academic teacher in the state who teaches one or more English language learners will be required to complete a graduate-level course to develop their skills providing Sheltered English Instruction.[i] The course is a research-based, state-of-the-art learning experience for educators, designed to raise the achievement of the state’s English language learners by enhancing teachers’ knowledge and transforming instructional practices. This SEI Endorsement course will continue through 2016. [i] Teachers who already have expertise in Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) will have the opportunity to test out of the course.

RETELL Instructor Opportunity Application Instructions To learn more please join one of our information sessions via webinar: Thursday, April 11 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 2:30 – 3:30, or Tuesday, May 21 2:30 – 3:30 • Required Qualifications • Two (2) years experience teaching ESL and/or Bilingual education in a K-12 setting, or equivalent or related expertise. • MA, CAGS, or higher degree in any of the following or closely related fields: • Applied Linguistics • English as a Second Language (ESOL, TESL) • Language, Literacy and Culture • Substantial experience providing professional development to teachers either in a university or professional development setting. • Preferred Qualifications • Fluency in a language other than English; or experience studying another language or living abroad. • Experience in or familiarity with online teaching to adults. • Knowledge of the WIDA standards. • Knowledge of the Common Core (Massachusetts State Frameworks). • ESE reserves a right to modify these requirements in order to effectively recruit sufficient qualified instructors. At the time of interviews, applicants will also be asked to deliver a fifteen (15) minute mini-lesson on a topic that is related to the syllabus.
