  1. Properties of water: • Universal solvent • Is a medium for chemical reactions • A reactant in photosynthesis • A product of cellular respiration • Helps maintain homeostasis b/c it • heats up and cools down slowly • 6. Helps maintain homeostasis b/c it can • regulate body temperature through • evaporative cooling (sweating) • 7. Surface tension – allows water strider • to “float” on water • 8. Produces turgidity (fullness – opposite • of wilted) in plants

  2. **Differentiation = when cells become specialized, occurs as zygote divides by mitosis to form the all the types of somatic cells in the organism **Cytokinesis = division of the cytoplasm, creates two separate cells **Zygote = fertilized egg, is 2N = same as parent 23 chromosomes from Mom, 23 from Dad = 46 in zygote (= same # as in Mom’s body cells = same # as in Dad’s body cells)

  3. No reproduction leads to extinction Mimicry = when one organism imitates another Ex. a bee fly has stripes like a bee – the fly has evolved this striped pattern b/c those with stripes survive and reproduce better than those without stripes Fertility = the ability to produce offspring or the birthrate

  4. The order of the nitrogen bases in DNA / Genes is the instructions for how to make proteins Genes (DNA) – RNA - Proteins

  5. Ribosomes – perform protein synthesis DNA in nucleus – instructions for protein synthesis Cell membrane = selectively permeable = semipermeable = controls what gets in and out Mitochondria = where cellular respiration occurs = release ATP energy from food = need lots of them in muscle cells and sperm cells

  6. Trees cut – causes erosion b/c no roots to hold soil, more run off b/c no roots to take in water Fire in a forest can be good = can open up the canopy and allow a greater variety of understory plants and animals A new species will be successful in an area if there is an open niche.

  7. Diffusion = movement from high to low, NO ATP energy used Osmosis = diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane NO ATP energy used Facilitated Diffusion = fr. High to low, through a protein in the membrane, NO ATP energy used Active Transport = from LOW to HIGH, through a protein in the membrane, ATP energyREQUIRED
