  1. Welcome to The Bilston Online Centre A Brief Outline of I.T. at Bilston Community Centre

  2. In The Beginning • Way back at the Turn of The Century a simple 3 Computer network was created. • This was part of a Commemoration of The New Millennium. • A virtual Community for the year 2000 • Internet access was via a special telephone line (ISDN) and by today’s standards was very slow.

  3. UK Online • Around 2001/2002 the Government of the day launched UK Online a major project to provide Free/Low Cost access to Computers and The Internet. • Consortiums and Partnerships were formed all over the UK including Wolverhampton. • Wolverhampton City Council obtained funds of £400,000 for a City wide UK Online project. This funding was intended to last 3 years. • Many Community Centres across Wolverhampton were chosen to have a UK Online Centre installed – Bilston was one of them. • 8 New computers were installed in the existing Computer room with the 3 we already had this bought the total to 11. • 5 Years later The City Council ended support for UK Online. • BCA decided to retain the Computers in our Centre

  4. Bilston Online • Bilston Community Association decided to continue to continue as a UK Online Centre • However in 2007 a decision was made to drop The UK Online branding. • Thus The Bilston Online Centre came about. • We ran some successful I.T. classes in conjunction with The City of Wolverhampton College. • Due to more and more funding cutbacks. College supported classes finally ceased in 2010. • Since then we have been running a popular drop In session on Tuesday Mornings • Early 2011 we finally ceased to be a UK Online Centre – we simply couldn’t generate the number of new students required every month to meet UK Online requirements

  5. June/July 2011 • For many years Wolverhampton City Council’s Youth and Play Division had an office in Bilston Community Centre. Early 2011 it was announced that this office would be closed and the room handed back for CA use – in 2010 this room was named The Des Smith Room in honour of our late treasurer. • Some time after this announcement the suggestion was made that the Bilston Online Centre should be relocated to The Des Smith Room. • In due course this proposal was approved and plans were made for the move. • June 2011 saw the move take place, in the space of a week 12 Computers and assorted peripherals together with the desks were relocated to the new room. • That brings us up to today July 23rd 2011 with the official re-launch of our Bilston Online Centre.

  6. Classes & Future Plans We currently have one very popular class running, this will continue as long as there is a demand for it.
