  2. Who we are ‘Global Citizenship involves […]exploring what links us to other people, places and cultures, the (e)quality of those relationships, and how we can learn from, as well as about, [them]’. (Baker, 2008, emphasis added) • The Ustinov International Forum (UIF) is a Ustinov College project aimed at assisting such exploration, by facilitating the knowledge of the other through organised cultural events and language exchanges. • The UIF core members are Lin Xu, Sakib Amin, Xi Xu and Cesare Aloisi Cesare Aloisi 2013

  3. What we do • Language exhcanges, calligraphy classes, food competitions, international performances. • No, most of our work is about the interactions we have in preparation for and during these events, which will be my focus today. Is that all? Cesare Aloisi 2013

  4. Our main challenge... • A short story: ...seeing dead flies. Cesare Aloisi 2013

  5. The moral of the story • We all know that we don’t know. What we don’t know, is what we don’t know until somebody or something shakes the jar, whatever that might be. • Understanding your expected behaviour at events. • Communicating with the rest of the team. • Knowing when everything is fine: the ‘waiter complex’. Some examples Cesare Aloisi 2013

  6. My approach • Don’t deal with cultures, deal with people. • Use a ‘tit for two (or three) tats’ strategy, trying to complement missing information with understanding. • Everything in moderation. Cesare Aloisi 2013
