  1. Integer Rules Review

  2. Warm-Up: 9/9 1. Solve: -42 + 17 2. If yesterday it was -4° and today it is 23°, how much warmer is it today than yesterday?

  3. Today’s Agenda • Warm-Up • Adding and Subtracting Integers Review • Multiplying and Dividing Integer Rules • Integer Foldable • Wrap-Up • Homework

  4. Adding Integers Review • How do we add integers with the same sign? • Add and keep the sign • How do we add integers with different signs? • Subtract and keep the sign of the larger.

  5. Let’s Sing a Song! Addition Rule: Sung to the tune of “Row, row, row, your boat” Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract, keep the sign of the higher number, then it will be exact!

  6. Let’s Try Some…… • -32 + (-12) • 30 + (-25) • -19 + 16 • (-18) + (-15) • -44 • 5 • -3 • -33

  7. Integers and Money • Remember….. A negative number is like losing money and a positive number is like winning money

  8. Integers and Money • For example, -16 + 8 is the same as…. A loss of $16 A gain of $8 **This means you are still down $8!**

  9. Subtracting Integers Review • How do we change a subtraction problem into an addition problem? • Same Change Opposite • (-4) – (-5) = (-4) + 5 • 5 – 10 = 5 + (-10)

  10. Integers and Money • This is also like winning and losing money. • 5 – 10 • A win of $5 and a loss of $10 • This means you are in the hole $5, or -5

  11. Let’s Try Some • (-23) – 10 • 18 – (-5) • (-15) – (-8) • 20 – 30 • -33 • 23 • -7 • -10

  12. Multiplication and Division of Integers

  13. Here’s a way I can Remember! • To remember whether your answer will be positive or negative when MULTIPLYING or DIVIDING, we’ll use: Mr. Multiplivision

  14. When multiplying Integers, cover the Two signs you are using Choral Response What sign is left uncovered? Ex.: 5 (-3) Negative, - That is the sign of The answer = -15

  15. Practice … (-10)(3) = 21  -5 = -13  -6 =

  16. Division Good News: It’s not any different! Ex.: -48  (-4) = + 12

  17. Reminder: Equal means it works both ways! 

  18. SOLVE: (4)(-7)  (-2)

  19. (4)(-7)  (-2) First, (4)(-7) = - 28 Finish it!(-28)(-2) Answer: 14

  20. Integer Foldable • http://everybodyisageniusblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/integer-foldable.html

  21. Put your thinking cap on! • A, B, C, D, and E correspond to points on a thermometer. Use these clues to plot the points:*B and D are negative *D is warmer than C *B is warmer than C *E and D are the same distance from zero *E is colder than A • Compose your own thermometer problem and include your answer.

  22. Homework • Handout: Problems 1-10
