  1. LITERATURE CONCEPTS SLAM By: Walter Dean Myers

  2. Setting • 145th Street (New York)- Most of the things in the story happens in this neighbor hood. A poor place with lots of economically unstable people. Slam faces a lot of problems in this are not to mention he lives there. He also has many of his conflicts between friends here. This is where a great percentage of the story takes place. • Latimer high school- This is his new school. A new place and new basketball team. Troubles with teachers and grades usually occur in this setting. • The Basketball Court- this is where he forgets everything and just does his best and plays the best. Usually his happy times happen here.

  3. CHARACTER • Slam- he is the protagonist. We as the readers witness every twist and turn that happens in his life and how he tries to overcome it. He is partially a static character and developing character. Because most of him has tried to change but still part of him self remains the same at the end of the story. Alem is back skinned, muscular and loves basketball. • Ice- he is supposedly Slams best friend. But when he changes schools everything changes. Ice grows apart from Slam and starts hiding secrets. As Slam and Ice edge towards the truth Ice is a developing color. Most of Ice’s features are the same as Slams. • Teachers- Slam faces real problems with them, making then the antagonist. They are the main reasons slam fails in school, according to slam.

  4. PLOT • Exposition- Slam joins new school and leaves friends. Bad grades and other problems. • Rising Action- People start getting suspicious about his friend Ice. Problems worsen • Climax- Slam finds out his friend is dealing. • Resolution- Slam goes on with his own life and starts working harder.

  5. Conflict • PREDOMINANT • Man vs. Man- Slam vs. ice, their friendship is in jeopardy because of accusations that could be true.

  6. RESOLUTION • When Slam finds out about his friend dealing drugs. He is devastated. Because they knew each other since they were young. HE solves this by becoming independent and caring about himself. He forgets about Ice and focuses on himself.
