  3. Why use children’s literature? • To enhance children’s natural interest in math • Build on children’s experiences and knowledge • Integrate math with other activities • Actively introduce materials- model and demonstrate

  4. Objectives • Become aware of math concepts in OWL storybooks • Identify math concepts in storybooks • Develop math strategies/activities to teach these concepts throughout the day

  5. What types of mathematical experiences should we be providing in Pre-k? • Number experiences • Spatial experiences • Sorting and classifying experiences • Patterning experiences • Measurement experiences • Data collection experiences • Experiences to learn and use concepts of geometry

  6. Where’s the math in children’s literature? Let’s explore:

  7. Your turn!! • Read the children’s book. • Make a list of math vocabulary related to the story and illustrations. • Make a list of the math concepts/skills that you might teach using this book. • Locate and correlate these concepts/skills to Foundations and/or CMS standards. • Create a math activity related to the concepts identified.
