  2. Separation of mixtures Mixtures are matter that are made up of two or more compounds and elements which are not chemically combined. Physical properties may change. Their atoms do not change. The components of a mixture can be separated by several methods or techniques. These techniques are called filtration, distillation, crystallization, sublimation, and chromatography. Each separation technique makes use of differences in the physical properties of the components.

Separating mixture of un-dissolved solids from a liquid. • It is used to separate insoluble solid from a soluble solid. • The insoluble solid remains on the filter and the liquid passes through. • Separating liquid mixtures of different boiling points. • The temperature tells the type of vapor that is entering the condenser. • Ex: pure water can be distilled from soft drinks, sea water, etc. • Used to recover a soluble solid from its solution. • For solids that decomposes on heating. • Is the process which a solid changes to vapor without melting and without going through the liquid phase. • It can be used to separate two solids present in a mixture when one of the solids sublimates but not the other. • Used mainly to separate color by adsorption • and partition. • Ex: to separate the different colored components that make up black ink. • \
