  3. Early Life • Muhammad Ali,then named Cassius Marcellus Clay, was born on January 17, 1942. • He was born in Louisville, Kentucky. • He was named after his father, who painted billboard signs • His mother, Odessa O'Grady Clay, was a household domestic

  4. Continued • Clay was first exposed to boxing when he threatened to "whup" a thief who stole his bike • A nearby policeman/boxing coach told Clay that he should learn how to box first • Clay started training six times a week • He created his own training diet including lots of milk and raw egg

  5. Early Boxing Career • Clay made his professional debut in October 29, 1960, winning a six round decision over Tunney Hunsaker • Until 1963, Clay's record was 19-0 with 15 wins by knockout

  6. Continued • Clay was known for taunting in pre game weigh-ins, and for telling his opponent that he would "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" and "your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see" • Clay's ten round fight with Doug Johnson was named "Fight of the Year" in 1963

Mid Boxing Career • Clay fought with Sonny Liston in his first title match, and ended up winning in the seventh round • After he was declared the victor, he shouted "I fooled you!" to the crowd, along with "I shook up the world!" and "I must be the greatest!" • Clay became the youngest boxer to take the title from a reigning heavyweight champion.

  8. Continued • Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali following his Islam conversion • Liston and Ali met up later for a rematch, and Liston was knocked out midway through the first round. • Ali's punch was dubbed as the "phantom punch"

  9. Continued • Ali's second title defense was against Floyd Patterson • The fight was alleged to be brutal because of Patterson's refusal to call Ali by his muslim name • Throughout the fight Ali taunted, saying "what's my name," going on to win the match

Continued • Ali faced off WBA champion Ernie Terrell in Houston • Similar to Patterson, Terrell refused to call Ali by his muslim name • Once again, Ali taunted Terrell, saying "What's my name Uncle Tom... what's my name?" • Critics described the fight as "one of the ugliest boxing fights" and "a wonderful demonstration of boxing skill and barbarous display of cruelty

  11. Declining Boxing Career • Later in 1976, Ali participated in an exhibition bout in Tokyo against a Japanese pro wrestler • Though it was a publicity stunt, the fight affected Ali's mobility as he suffered leg damage • He suffered two blood clots and an infection in the fight

Continued • In February of 1978 Ali faced Leon Spinks • Ali won by decision, making him the first heavyweight to win the belt three times • He then announced his retirement from boxing • He reversed his decision to face Larry Holmes for the WBA belt for the fourth time. • Ali was suffering from medical issues and the fight was stopped in the eleventh round by his trainer

Personal Life • Ali has been married four times and has seven daughters and four sons • He currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife Lonnie • Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. Armed forces into the Vietnam war, even saying: "No, I am not going 10,000 miles to help murder, kill, and burn other people to simply help continue the domination of white slave masters over dark people the world over. This is the day and age when such evil injustice must come to an end."
