Who Wrote James? • James the brother of the Lord, James the Righteous, James the Lesser- Matthew 13:55-56 • Did not believe at first –Mark 3:21 Jesus is out of his mind! • Personal witness to the resurrection I Corinthians 15:7 • With the original disciples in the upper room Acts 1:14 • James a Torah observant follower of Jesus who became the leader of the Jerusalem church- Acts 15 • Martyred for his faith around 67 AD

  3. Who was James Writing to and What was the Purpose of the Book? • The 12 tribes in the diaspora-v.1 • A practical application of faith in Jesus- James 2:17 • Encouragement in the face of trials and persecution- James 1:2-4

  4. First Things First • James a servant/slave of God and the Lord Jesus-v.1 Matthew 20:25-28 Philippians 2:5-11 • A true servant desires above all to do the Masters will- Matthew 6:10 Luke 22:42 • The true servant of Jesus is not overcome by anxiety and changing circumstances- Philippians 4:6-7. 10-12

Consider it a Joy! v.2 • The servant of Jesus has been given the gift of joy- Psalm 4:7 John 16:24 • We have joy in spite of ( and sometimes because of) the circumstances Philippians 4:4 • We know how the story ends - John 16:33 I Peter 4:12 • Trust ( not circumstances) is the key to joy- Isaiah 12:2-3 • Keep your eyes on the prize- v.2-4 Philippians 3:8-11 II Corinthians 4:16-18
