WHAT is HOME? Provincial Awareness Campaign October 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador
Securing Adequate Accessible and Affordable HOUSING is extremely difficult for individuals and families across the income spectrum.
Seniors… “I had to leave my old place Because I was scared about my mobility. We need more housing made wheelchair accessible. Think of your family and what a disadvantage it will be when they get older.”
The Working Poor… “To pay the rent, and all the bills and childcare on top of it, it doesn’t leave room for much else. A lot of people are working hard to make a living and they have nothing left at the end of the month.”
Single Families… “It’s bad when your kid wants to be with mommy, but mommy has no place to live. I’m sleeping on a couch. I wish that I could put real life in front of people’s faces – then they would understand.”
Solutions: • All levels of government , departments and community partners working together to identify local solutions • Sharing effective practises • Use of existing tools and resources
What can you do… • Be aware of the issues • VOTE: Meet and speak with political leaders • Donate: financially, household items, etc., • Mentor/model • Speak out – media, injustice, truth/facts • VOLUNTEER: Join your local CAB
