  2. Purpose • To explore the relationship between the mass of an object and volume of space it occupies • By measuring incremental changes in volume as mass is increased, we hope to: • Determine a density constant of zinc • Show a directly proportional relationship between mass and volume

  3. Theory

  4. Procedure • Materials: • 250mL graduated cylinder, digital scale, 30 or more zinc washers, tap water • Procedure: • Fill graduated cylinder with approximately 70.0 mL tap water; record exact amount. • Weigh a stack of 5 zinc washers on scale and record mass. • Place the stack of washers in the graduated cylinder and record new volume. • Leave washers in the cylinder and repeat the process 9 more time, recording all values of mass and volume. • Determine levels of uncertainty for scale and graduated cylinder.

Analysis • Experimental data supports hypothesis • As the mass of the zinc increased, the volume of space it occupied increased proportionally • Positive linear graph • Slope of graph ( ) represents zinc’s density (ρ = m/V) ρ=7.50g/mL • Equation for graph (assuming b=0) Mass (g)=7.50g/mL∙Volume (mL) Experimental data is very close to actual density of zinc (7.14g/mL)

  9. Conclusion • Predication was supported • When the mass of an object increases, the volume of that object will increase proportionately • Graphically represented by positive, linear trend
