  2. State Standard 4.1 Understand conditions, actions, and motivations that contribute to conflict or to cooperation.

  3. Often, CC go poorly, not because of content, but because the other person suspects your motive. • This often occurs because the other person assumes something about you.

  4. When this happens… 1. Step out of the content. 2. Create safety. • Step back into the content.

  5. The first step is to establish Mutual Purpose. • This means others believe that we are working toward a common goal and that we care about their interests.

  6. You must be sincere or others will detect your manipulation. • Examine your motives. Ask: 1. What do I want for me? 2. What do I want for other person? 3. What do I want for the relationship?

  7. Journal Topic • Think of someone with whom you need to talk about something very important. What are the key points that you would make to establish Mutual Purpose? • How do you think this person would respond?

  8. ActivityWithin groups, make a list of 10 specific examples of crucial conversations that could be used in class.
