Issues with Current Filtering • OWA client has limited filtering capabilities • Spam adds overhead, takes up significant resources on local servers • Spam is passed along to ISP’s as a result of @uab.edu forwarding • E-mail sent to ISP may not use filters • Legitimate e-mail sent to ISP may not be available to be read • Legitimate e-mail sent to ISP may be delayed • UAB Servers could be placed on “black list”

  6. Pilot Testing of Spam Blocking • Users can select “high water mark” for which all their incoming e-mail with this SA score or higher will be discarded. • Pilot test started Saturday, Jan 28, 2006 • Pilot testing group was within IT and increased from 3 to 15 users during first week, and was been offered to TIMGROUP on Feb 17, 2006 • During first week, 14,224 messages were not sent to users.

  7. Percentage Drop in Junk E-mail during Pilot Test

  8. Timeline for Campus Wide Implementation • Spam Blocking plan will include SA score to use for default “high water mark” for each @uab.edu user with opt-out feature and feature that each user can change their SA “high water mark” • Train AskIT agents on spam blocking service and opt-out feature • Make recommendation of Spam Blocking plans to VP of IT by 24 Feb 06 • Obtain UAB Administration approval for implementation on Friday, March 10. • E-mail all @uab.edu email users of spam blocking plan on Sunday, March 5
