  1. Managing Your Program Through the Defense Choosing the topic Preparing your proposal Conducting the research Writing the thesis Defending the thesis

  2. Choosing the topic • Think broadly • Write down your ideas/thoughts • Read, read, read, read,….. • Create a timeline • Create an electronic and hard copy filing system • Conceptualize a pilot test/study

  3. Preparing the proposal • Read other proposals • Complete a comprehensive literature review • Conduct preliminary research • Write the first 3 chapters of thesis • Develop a descriptive title • Have well-thought-out research questions • Pick an appropriate methodology • Document preliminary results • Pick a committee that will help you be successful!

  4. Conducting the research • Document … document … document • Everything you are collecting • It could be more important than you think! • Analyze results • Consider additional experiments to validate conclusions • Allocate time for conclusions, implications, and future research!

  5. Writing the thesis • Write thesis along with progress of project • Thesis writing is iterative • The thesis will contain much more detail than other types of technical documents (this is okay and expected) • Use clear, precise writing • Review other dissertations/thesis from your field • Introduce all tables and graphs in your text…they can’t speak for themselves • Avoid lots of bulleted lists. Your thesis needs to read smoothly.

  6. Defending the thesis • Attend the defenses of your peers so you know what to expect • Discuss your research frequently with others before your defense • Have appropriate committee members review relevant portions of your thesis before the defense (avoid surprises) • Don’t be defensive • Remember…you are the expert now. • Don’t forget to be working on your journal article (or you won’t be getting your degree…)
