  1. HOW TO WRITE A GOOD LEAD?

  2. THE IMPORTANCE OF LEAD • Students are forever amazed when they find out how important the lead is. The lead organizes the story. The right lead sets the writer on the right track.

  3. PEOPLE WHOSE JOB IS TO COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, IDEAS AND FEELINGS KNOW THAT THE BEGINNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE WORK

  4. NOT ONLY DOES AN INTERESTING BEGINNING GRAB THE ATTENTION OF THE READER, VIEWER OR LISTENER, IT ALSO HELPS THE WRITER OR COMPOSER KEEP THE THEME OR FOCUS CLEARLY IN VIEW

  5. THERE ARE FEW RULES OF THE ROAD ABOUT LEADS. GENERALLY, WE SAY THEY SHOULD BE SHORT – LESS THAN 35 WORDS IF POSSIBLE

  6. THE RULES DEPEND ON WHETHER THE STORY IS A STRAIGHT NEWS PIECE OR A FEATURE

  7. THE NEWS STORY FORCES THE WRITER TO FASHION A LEAD THAT MOVES DIRECTLY TO THE NEWS POINT OR FOCUS OF THE EVENT.

  8. IF THE WRITER DECIDES TO TELL A FEATURE STORY, THE PACE CAN BE LEISURELY, AS WHEN A STORYTELLER RELATES TO A TALE. THE FEATURE WRITER NEED NOT GET RIGHT TO THE POINT, THE LEAD MAY BE DELAYED

  9. THE RULE OF THUMB • WHEN THE EVENT IS IMPORTANT OR SIGNIFICANT, THE STORY STRESSES THE THEME AT ONCE. THE LEAD IS DIRECT.

  10. WHEN THE STORY IS ABOUT AN UNUSUAL, ODD OR STRANGE EVENT, THE STORY DOES NOT NEED TO DESCRIBE WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT WAS SAID AT ONCE. • THE LEAD CAN BE DELAYED

  11. Delayed Direct Santa Claus is a child’s best friend. The kindly old gent pats little boys on the head and little girls on the cheek. But two weeks ago, says Carolyn Elliott, a Zale’s Department store Santa whacked her 6-year-old son Dennis. An elderly couple filed suit today for $1 million against the Franklin Realty Co. in whose downtown offices the couple’s daughter was fatally burned last August.

  12. Structuring the lead • S - V - O • Subject • Verb • Object • 5W + 1H • Who • What • When • Where • Why • How

  15. Violence against women occurred mostly to housewives throughout 2011, The National Commission on Violence against Women revealed on Wednesday. • The commission’s chairperson, YuniyantiChuzaifah, said that there were 119,107 cases of violence against women that occurred throughout 2011 with 95.61 percent of the cases centering on housewives. • Yuniyantisaid that housewives had remained the most common victims of violence over the past several years. • "A house is not yet a safe place for Indonesian women," she said. • Throughout 2011, the commission gathered the data on violence from 395 nationwide-partner institutions spread across 30 provinces.
