  1. CDC Unified Process PM Summit Overviewhttp://www.cdc.gov/cdcup/ Daniel Vitek MBA, PMP – Consultant to CDC

  2. Website • The CDC Unified Process is located on the World Wide Web at http://www.cdc.gov/cdcup/ and is accessible to CDC employees, partners, contractors, and anyone throughout the World interested in leveraging its valuable content to increase project success. • The website is the central communication hub of the Unified Process and makes the following information and support available and easily accessible to project teams: • Step-by-step descriptions of all the processes that projects must follow to comply with Federal regulations, CDC policies, and to promote successful and high-quality project outcomes. • The approximate timing and level of effort required for each process and the integration points between processes so that project managers can proactively plan for appropriate resources, funding, dependencies, and project schedules. • A collection of Practices Guides that provide guidance to project teams about key management practices. • A collection of reusable Templates and Check Lists that project teams can use to facilitate project management and delivery. • Other project management related documents, information, links, tools, and training to assist and educate project teams. http://www.cdc.gov/cdcup/

  3. Practices Guides • CDC Unified Process Practices Guides are brief documents that provide guidance to project teams about key project management practices. Each Practices Guide presents a practice overview and describes the requirements, best practices, activities, and key terms related to these requirements. In addition, templates relevant to the practice are referenced at the end of each guide.

  4. Templates • CDC Unified Process Templates are standardized project management documents that project teams can use as a starting point for their project management documents, customizing them to meet the unique needs of each project. Each template includes content commonly used in such a document, boilerplate text, and instructions to the author to assist them in completing and adapting the template for use on their project. CDC Unified Process Templates are provided as guidance to be used in the absence of something more sophisticated already available to the project team.

  5. Checklists • CDC Unified Process Checklists are brief documents listing the items to be noted, checked, remembered, delivered, etc. for a range of project management practices. These checklists are Practice Guide reference lists that are used by project teams to ensure that all appropriate activities related to a particular project management practice have been addressed.

  6. Process Guides • CDC Unified Process Process Guides are required to comply with various federal regulations in addition to PHIN and CDC policies and standards. Information about these required processes is available from such sources as government websites, the CDC Intranet, and CDC policy documents. However, the information currently available about these requirements is often not presented from the perspective of the project manager and project team activities. CDC Unified Process Process Guides were developed to provide that perspective.

  7. Process Assessment • CDC Unified Process Process Assessment Questionnaire was developed to help project teams comply with Federal regulations along with PHIN and CDC policies and standards. The specific processes a CDC project team must complete for compliance vary from project-to-project based on a number of characteristics. This questionnaire asks a short series of questions to help the project team assess which processes they are required to complete for compliance.

  8. Document Library • The CDC Unified Process Document Library is a matrix created to centralize the availability of CDC Unified Process Practices Guides, Templates, Checklists, Process Guides, and other relevant information available in various electronic formats.

  9. Presentations • The CDC Unified Process makes available an ongoing series of presentations dedicated to the sharing of management knowledge and the increased success of projects at CDC. As presentations are conducted they are digitally recorded and made available for viewing and download on the CDC Unified Process Website.

  10. Newsletters • The CDC Unified Process Project Management Newsletter is a monthly publication that keeps the public health community abreast of the latest project management news, techniques, processes, practices, etc. Its content is specifically tailored to address the unique needs of managing projects in the public health arena.

  11. Other Tools • The CDC Unified Process offers a plethora of information and tools. Other content includes: • Unified Process history, news, and highlights • Information, references, and links to additional information about project management • Guidance on the application of management and documentation rigor • Mapping of the CDC Unified Process to well known system development life cycles • Management glossary and common acronyms • Reference to the Department of Health and Human Services Enterprise Performance Life Cycle
