  1. Physical vs. Chemical Properties

  2. Physical Property • Any property that can be observed without changing the compositionof the substance

  3. 5 Senses • Sight • Smell • Taste • Touch • Hearing

  4. Viscosity • Tendency of a fluid to keep from flowing • The greater the viscosity, the slower the liquid moves

  5. Conductivity • Material’s ability to allow heat or electricity to flow

  6. Malleability • Ability of a material to be shaped or hammered without breaking

  7. Hardness • Ability of a material to be scratched

  8. Melting & Boiling Points • Each substance has their own • Can be used to identify a substance

  9. Density • Mass/volume • Can be used to test the purity of a substance

  10. Chemical Properties • Ability to produce a change in the composition of matter • Can be observed only as the matter is changing

  11. Flammability • Material’s ability to burn in the presence of oxygen

  12. Reactivity • How readily a substance combines chemically with other substances

  13. What are some differences between chemical & physical properties?

  14. What properties (physical or chemical) are helpful in identifying a substance?
