  2. -Leader Xerxes- • Reign 486-465BC • Born 519-465 BC • Died 465BC at the age of 54 • Xerxes was murdered by Artabanus who was the leader of the royal guard. • Xerxes mom was Atossa(daughter of Cyrus The Great)and his dad was Darius

  3. -Leader Xerxes- • Xerxes is most known for the campaign he launched against Greece in hopes of burning Athens to the ground and the battle of Thermopylae ware an army of 7,000 Greek cities soldiers including the famed 300 Spartans were they  held of his army of more the 2,000,000 soldiers. Although the battle of Thermopylae was considered a victory for the Persians and  they  burned down Athens, Xerxes is still most recognized for Thermopylae and how is massive army was held off by 7,000 Greeks.

  5. Maps of the Persian empire at its highest point. Controlled a piece of Europe, Asia, and a small piece of Africa; around Egypt.

  6. The Persians live on a rocky mountain area.

  7. -The Persians Religion- • The Persians developed one of the oldest religions, Zoroastrianism. • Monotheistic. • Only god, “Lord Wisdom” • One big concept is the nature of good and evil. • Not many people follow the religion any more.

  8. -Some culture aspects- • Persia culture consisted of: • Music • Art/Statue making • Architecture • Rug Weaving  • And Gardens, which were designed to make a reflected paradise from Earth.

  9. -The Persians Politics- • The Persians lived under a king. • Under the king was the scribes and nobles who kept records. • Then comes the treasurer after the scribes. • And also satraps were spread around the Persian Empire to act like kings to the area the king was controlling. • The Persains were also big on there military.

  10. -Timeline Event #1- • .550 B.C. – Persian Empire is established when Cyrus II of Persia overtakes King Astyages of Media, which gives Persia most of Iran and Anatolia (Turkey), before defeating the Lydians, allies of the Babylon and Egypt

  11. -Timeline Event #2- • .539 – 525 B.C. – Persia overtakes Babylonia, giving them Mesopotamia and the eastern Mediterranean, and Egypt, becoming dominant power in Near East

  12. -Timeline Event #3- • 521 – 498 B.C. – Persia adds new territories, including northwest India and the Aegean Sea, while placing forth massive royal buildings at Susa and Persepolis

  13. -Timeline Event #4- • 498 – 479 B.C. – Persia clashes with Greek territories, leading to a full war, which ends in defeat for the Persians. Key battles include Thermopylae, Marathon, and Plataea; key Persian leaders, Darius I, Xerxes I

  14. -Timeline Event #5- • 479 – 330 B.C. – Many different Persian kings come and go before Alexander the Great of Macedonia conquers the entire empire, despite having to fight for every inch, end of traditional Persian empire

  15. -Conclusion- • The Persian empires long time effect was that it spread imperialism a great deal, and it was a great empire, and its overtaking lead to even greater empires, which has affected modern nations today. • Its short term effect was that it lead to a severe shift in the balance of power in the near East area, which in turn spread Persian culture from India to Turkey.
