Word Order. In simple sentences, Filipino has a subject and a predicate (or comment about the subject). The predicate usually comes before the subject. Diplomat si Hiro. Taga-Europa si Patricia. Mabait ang nars. Matalino siya. Mura ito. Hiro is a diplomat. Patricia is from Europe.

  2. In simple sentences, Filipino has a subject and a predicate (or comment about the subject). The predicate usually comes before the subject. • Diplomat si Hiro. • Taga-Europa si Patricia. • Mabait ang nars. • Matalino siya. • Mura ito. • Hiro is a diplomat. • Patricia is from Europe. • The nurse is kind. • He/She is smart. • This is cheap.

  3. In questions answerable by yes or no, the question particle ba is used. It is placed after the first full phrase of a sentence. However, when the one-syllabled pronouns ka (you), ko (my), and mo (your) are used, the particle ba is placed after them. • Bago ba ito? • Malakas ba ang tubig? • Pupunta ba si Sam sa party? • Babalik ka ba? • Gusto mo ba ng minatamis? • Is this new? • Is the water pressure strong? • Is Sam going to the party? • Are you coming back? • Do you want some dessert?

  4. In asking information questions, the following interrogatives are used:

Examples: • Sino po sila? • Ano ang pangalan mo? • Alin ang mas bago? • Ilan ang kapatid mo? • Magkano ito? • Taga-saan si Hans? • Saan ang tindahan? • Kailan ang piyesta roon? • Bakit mahal ito? • Paano ka pupunta roon? • May I know who’s calling, Sir/Ma’am? • What’s your name? • Which is newer? • How many siblings do you have? • How much is this? • Where does Hans come from? • Where is the store? • When is the fiesta there? • Why is this expensive? • How will you get there?

  6. In imperatives, infinitive forms of the verbs are used, but in some cases, verb affixes are dropped.Actor/focus form • Magpahinga ka. • Maupo muna kayo. • Tuloy po kayo. • Ingat ka. • Balik ka. • Take a rest. • Please take a seat first, Sir/Ma’am. • Please come in. • Take care. • Come again

Object/direction focus verbs • Imbitahin mo si Lani. • Hihintayin mo ako dito. • Isama mo ang kaibigan mo. • Ilagay mo ang bulaklak sa mesa. • Tawagan mo siya. • Balitaan mo ako. • Invite Lani. • Wait for me here. • Bring your friend along. • Put the flowers on the table. • Call him/her. • Keep in touch (keep me informed)

  8. In expressing requests, the verbal affix paki- is used. The verb stems affixed by paki- take an object/recipient as the focus of the sentence. • Pakilinis ang mga bintana at sahig. • Paki-abot ang kalamansi. • Pakilabas ang manok sa ref. • Pakihugasan ang kotse. • Pakibigyan mo siya ng tsaa. • Pakitulungan mo ako. • Please clean the windows and the floor. • Please pass the calamansi. • Please take the chicken out of the refrigerator. • Please wash the car. • Please give him/her some tea. • Please help me.
